A man has been banned from keeping animals for three years after three dogs were found suffering in appalling conditions in Moray. Graham Elrick of Nelson Terrace, in Keith, pled guilty to failing to provide adequate nutrition, clean water and a sanitary environment for a lurcher called Lady, and two white shih tzus named Scooby and Scrappy, at Elgin Sheriff Court on October 13.
The 66-year-old was banned from keeping animals for three years and fined £470 following a Scottish SPCA investigation. A concerned member of the public had reported the conditions of the three dogs found living at the property. Officers visited the home on September 29, 2021, and found the three pups inside.
The two shih tzus were severely matted and unable to see. Their eyes had formed discharge, causing hard crusts to dry on their matted fur, pulling at their skin and leaving them both in pain.
Scooby and Scrappy were also seen to be covered in clumps of faeces which hung from their tails and their nails were overgrown. Inspectors believe the dogs suffered two to three months of neglect before being found.
There was no clean water for the three malnourished and dehydrated animals within the property, which was also found to be extremely dirty and cluttered. Scooby and Scrappy had to be sedated to have their bodies shaved by vets. All three dogs have gone on to make full recoveries and have been rehomed.
The charity has welcomed the sentencing of Elrick who they hope will 'seriously reconsider' his ability to look after animals in the future.
Scottish SPCA acting chief inspector Fiona McKenzie said, “We are pleased that Graham Elrick has been handed a three-year ban and a £470 fine. We hope Elrick will seriously reconsider his ability to care for
