Critics Choice Awards: 'Mank' Leads With 12 Nominations

Amanda Seyfried has one big regret about “ Mank.” Yes, the David Fincher film about “Citizen Kane” screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz has earned her some of the best marks of her career and made her, for the first time, a top awards contender.

EXCLUSIVE: David Fincher’s Mank has been near the top of the heap this awards season, scoring the most nominations at the Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards and a place on the AFI Top 10 movies of 2020 for the take on the relationship of screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz and Orson Welles during the writing of the iconic Citizen Kane.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the body which oversees the Oscars, has revealed the early contenders for its so-called ‘below-the-line’ categoriesSoul, Mank and Da 5 Bloods are among the films that featured in some of the nine shortlists unveiled ahead of the 93rd Academy Awards, due to take place in April. Mank, David Fincher’s black-and-white ode to old Hollywood, was included on the lists for makeup and hairstyling, original score and visual effects.

Nominations for the Critics Choice Awards have been announced, with Netflix's Mank leading the way and British stars in the running for several prizes. The shortlist follows those of the Golden Globes and the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) awards, which revealed their nominations earlier in February.

A24’s tender drama of a Korean American family seeking a new beginning on an Arkansas farm, Minari was just behind with 10 nominations.

Mank‘s Amanda Seyfried had three words to describe receiving her first Golden Globe Nomination on Wednesday: “so f*cking awesome.” The Mamma Mia! and Les Miserables actress will compete alongside fellow nominees Glenn Close, Olivia Colman, Jodie Foster and Helena Zengel for the Best Supporting Actress in a Drama prize.

Netflix’s drama Mank led all Golden Globe feature nominations this morning with a count of six, and one of those belonged to composers Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross’ score for the David Fincher film. Mank reps the fourth feature between the filmmaker and the composers, the latter who immediately took home the Oscar and Golden Globe in the first noms for their score of 2010’s The Social Network.

In 2018, Gary Oldman nabbed his first Golden Globe award for his performance and transformation as Winston Churchill in Joe Wright’s Darkest Hour. Three years later and Oldman’s in the Golden Globes’ best actor in a drama race for his unveiled performance as Citizen Kane co-scribe Herman J. Mankiewicz in David Fincher’s Mank.
