Greater Manchester Police have responded to the viral wave of TikToks of women filmed on the streets of Manchester city centre. The videos, focusing on women walking while on nights out, have racked up hundreds of thousands of views on the social media platform.
Often captioned 'Manchester nightlife,' the footage appears to zoom in on women unaware they are being filmed, usually around the Deansgate and Spinningfields area.
Following a Manchester Evening News report in 2022, a similar account was banned from TikTok for 'violating community guidelines' - but at least four similar accounts were active on the site at the time of writing. After the Manchester Evening News contacted TikTok, they said they had removed the accounts for 'violating community guidelines' but said there is 'no evidence to suggest a recent surge in videos filming people without consent'. They added misogyny is 'prohibited' on the platform.

Women have hit out at the 'creepy' videos, many of which have gathered hundreds of comments and shares. GMP told the M.E.N. that while it is not illegal to film people in public without their consent, 'women and girls should feel safe on a night out'.
The force said women who are filmed 'in a manner which is causing them alarm or distress' should contact the police immediately, saying officers will 'listen' and 'investigate' each report on its individual facts, as well as provide access to specialist services.
Stressing their commitment to 'measures against predatory and misogynistic behaviour', the force says 'context can determine whether this behaviour is deemed criminal.'
