A ‘creepy’ Scots nurse who bombarded a former mental health patient with ‘flirtatious’ Facebook messages despite her begging him to stop has been struck off. Gordon Linton was working at the Carseview Centre in Dundee when he met the woman during her short inpatient stay between March and April 2020.
The 53-year-old told the woman he thought she was “beautiful”, “adorable” and asked her to “give me a chance” as he attempted to forge an intimate relationship with her. An internal investigation was launched after the former patient raised the alarm with NHS Tayside as she feared he was going to turn up at her home uninvited.
But Linton ended up threatening the investigating officer via email, with him writing: “You f*** with me you are unemployed within a year. I f****** mean business.” He was reported to the Nursing and Midwifery Council which has found all the allegations against him proved and banned him from the profession.
The hearing was told that the woman, known as Patient A, had accepted a friend request from Linton before he began sending her messages and trying to call her around a week after leaving the facility. Despite telling him to leave her alone, the nurse continued attempting to engage her in conversation, with his actions found to be ‘sexually motivated’.
In her evidence, the woman said: “The messages started fine, just chit chat and then he got creepy. He mentioned my daughter – that freaked me out. He asked for my address.
“I realised that he was trying to get to know me, to go out with him or to have sex with him.” The watchdog panel concluded that Linton’s actions fell “seriously short of the conduct and standards expected of a nurse” particularly as he was aware of the “vulnerabilities” of the patient.
