The number of Covid cases in Scotland has risen, as fears continue to increase over the new Eris variant.
The latest figures released by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) showed 20.09 per 100,000 of the population in Scotland were recorded with the virus in the last week.
Eris is the latest variant giving scientists concerns. It is already the dominant coronavirus variant in the US and has surpassed the XBB.1.16 (Arcturus) strain in terms of how transmissibility.
According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates, Eris was responsible for 20.6 percent of Covid cases in the US in the third week of August, which was more than any other strain. Formally known as EG.5, its nickname comes from the Greek goddess of strife and discord.
Below are the areas in Scotland with the most cases over the past seven days:
Glasgow City 151
Edinburgh 126
Fife 84
North Lanarkshire 80
Earlier this month Scott Roberts, MD, a Yale Medicine infectious diseases specialist, said: “I am not aware of data suggests EG.5 leads to worse cases of COVID-19 compared to prior variants. Similar to all variants to have arisen, there is some extra degree of immune evasiveness because of a slight difference in genotype.
“These summer COVID-19 spikes have occurred for the past three years, most likely because more people are travelling. COVID-19 vaccination is the most effective tool for prevention.”
The World Health Organization (WHO) has classified Eris as a “variant of interest”, which warns countries to monitor it more closely than other strains. The new variant is likely behind an uptick in hospitalisations due to Covid, reports the Mirror.
There are a number of symptoms medics say you should watch out for as the spread continues.
