Former Emmerdale actress Gemma Oaten has revealed she almost died after being rushed to hospital with kidney distress. The 37-year-old was suffering from Covid when her health took a turn for the worse on April 19. Days later she was diagnosed with milk-alkali syndrome, which can be caused by the excessive intake of calcium or the supplement calcium carbonate, which causes heightened levels in the patient's blood, making its balance become more alkaline. Recovering at her home in London alone, Gemma explained in a lengthy Instagram post how she was feeling about her shock diagnosis and how it has made her reevaluate her life.

I’ve had time to listen to what I need.Time to heal.Time to process the trauma.Time to turn the negative into a life changing positive.
“I’ve nearly lost my life 4 times before to an eating disorder, but this 5th time was different. This time there was no ED present. I’ve laughed, I’ve cried, I’ve done both at the same time. 1 day sick, the next ready to fight, but each day I’ve listened and learned.” Gemma previously told how she woke up in the early hours of Saturday with excruciating chest, stomach and back pains days after testing positive for Covid.
She called 111 for advice and was immediately rushed into hospital where her diagnosis was made. In rare and severe cases, like Gemma’s, it can be fatal as calcium deposits in the kidneys causing them to fail. She is now undergoing treatment and reducing her calcium intake.
