Coronation Street fans were left fuming when they discovered that the soap had been cancelled in favour of live FA Cup coverage. As Corrie fans tuned in to ITV on Friday 4 February they were expecting to catch up with the latest goings on in Weatherfield, but instead they were greeted with the Manchester United v Middlesbrough match, which kicked off at 8pm. While Coronation Street had announced the changes and aired extra episodes throughout the week to make up for it, that didn’t stop diehard fans from feeling disappointed that they weren’t getting their Friday soap fix.
"Don't forget there's no #Corrie #CoronationStreet tonight," one sad fan posted next to an unhappy face emoji. Get exclusive celebrity stories and fabulous photoshoots straight to your inbox with OK!'s daily newsletter. You can sign up at the top of the page.
Another person complained: "No #Corrie tonight because of Man U vs Middlesbrough? How irrelevant." Meanwhile, a third said: "No #Corrie tonight unfortunately," along with a red heart emoji. While a fourth agreed, commenting: Experiencing phantom #corrie symptoms. Friday just doesn’t feel right without it." This follows Coronation Street and fellow ITV soap Emmerdale making permanent schedule changes, which will come into effect from this March.
As part of the channel's plans to entertain viewers with ‘super soap’ weeknights, viewers will also be able to immerse themselves in the drama of the cobbles during hour-long episodes on Monday, Wednesday and Friday evenings at 8pm. Meanwhile, Emmerdale will air at a brand new time of 7.30pm, as opposed to 7pm. While an action-packed hour long-episode will go out on Thursday evenings.
