A well-known former pub in Stockport is being torn down to make way for a new drive-through Greggs. Plans to flatten the old Farmers Arms pub at the junction of Stockport Road and Edgeley Road in Cheadle Heath were controversially given the green light last Autumn.
The former watering hole, said to date back to the 19th century, closed during the first Covid lockdown and never re-opened. Plans to demolish it and replace it with a Greggs, including a drive-through lane, first emerged in the summer of 2022 when a planning application was submitted by the brewery Greene King.
Last September planning approval was granted despite considerable local opposition. More than 64 letters of objection were submitted by local residents.

Concerns ranged from fears about the impact of extra traffic, a lack of healthy food options in the area, and the loss of a historic site in Stockport. Whilst local councillors, including some on the planning committe, also said they were against the proposal.
Chair Coun Steve Gribbon, said: "I know the area well enough and I don't like the idea of this, but we have to look at the material considerations of the application" as they were waved through.
The brewery said the site had become a target for vandals and that the new eatery would create 35 new jobs and "return it to a 'vibrant and beneficial use.'
A traffic survey carried out at a comparable site in Mansfield found that the 'worst case scenario' would mean five cars queuing for the drive-thru at peak times with 'no impact to the free flow of traffic on Edgeley Road', despite there being space for 24 cars to park at the site in total.
Demolition work has now got underway.
