Comic-Con 2023 Schedule: ‘Harley Quinn’ and ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ Coming to San Diego

When you look at the current year of massive hit films, with “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” being the biggest film of 2023 thus far and “Barbie” scoring the biggest opening weekend of the year, it’s starting to seem as if there’s quite a bit of nostalgia going around.

Brent Lang Executive Editor Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Movies are developing a sequel to “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem” and planning a two-season series that will serve as a “bridge” between the films. The spinoff series will appear on Paramount+.

Comic-Con, thousands of fans, packed inside a cavernous ballroom, roared to life as the cast for one of the biggest shows to appear at this year’s annual fan convention stepped onto the stage. Fans of NBC’s Quantum Leap were treated to the first eight minutes of the Season 2 premiere during Saturday’s panel at San Diego Comic-Con — and were surprised to see some new faces.

Vary Senior Entertainment Writer The perils of artificial intelligence to the entertainment industry came to San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday, with SAG-AFTRA national executive director Duncan Crabtree-Ireland joining a panel of voice actors organized by NAVA, the National Association of Voice Actors, to discuss the specific hazards AI is already posing to the profession. “We’ve got to reject the idea that this is just something that’s going to happen to us and we can’t say anything about it,” Crabtree-Ireland said at the outset of the panel, about whether AI could devastate the entertainment industry. “I think it definitely could, the question is whether we’re going to let that happen.”

Vary Senior Entertainment Writer The “Star Trek” Universe unveiled several first looks of its Paramount+ TV series at San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday, including an extended clip from the fifth and final season of “Star Trek: Discovery,” a trailer and premiere date for the fourth season of “Star Trek: Lower Decks,” and a trailer for the upcoming musical episode of “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds,” currently streaming its second season. The panel ended with a screening of the “Strange New Worlds” episode featuring the stars of the animated “Lower Decks” — which will be available on Paramount+ early, starting at 4 p.m. PT / 7 p.m. ET on Saturday.

American Dad directors and creatives stepped in for voiceover cast and key creatives today on San Diego Comic-Con to tease the upcoming season on TBS. The session kicked off with Innerspace parodied episode airing on Sept. 4, in which Francine, Stan’s wife, shrinks down into a small spaceship and takes a ride through Stan’s body; a battle with spiders ensues.

Ahead of the theatrical release of “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem,” Nickelodeon has acquired global rights to the storied Fred Wolf series, which follows the adventures of the heroes in a half-shell — Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael and Michelangelo. Under the deal, all 193 episodes of the original “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” — which ran from 1987 to 1996 — are set to debut digitally on Nickelodeon-owned and operated channels (such as YouTube, Pluto TV and O&O linear channels) later this month in the U.S., followed by Nickelodeon-branded channels and digital platforms internationally.

Naman Ramachandran The title of the Indian sci-fi epic long trailed as “Project K,” has been unveiled as “Kalki 2898 AD” at the ongoing San Diego Comic-Con, alongside a teaser. The film is directed by Nag Ashwin (“Mahanati”) and produced by C. Aswani Dutt’s Vyjayanthi Movies. It stars Indian A-listers Prabhas (“RRR” director S.S. Rajamouli’s Baahubali franchise); Deepika Padukone, star of “Pathaan,” the biggest Indian hit of the year so far; Amitabh Bachchan, who starred in 2022 hits “Uunchai” and “Brahmastra Part One: Shiva,”; Kamal Haasan who starred in and produced “Vikram,” one of the biggest hits of 2022 and has “Indian 2” in the works; and Disha Patani, who was last seen in “Ek Villain Returns” (2022).

Breaking out of Hall H here in Comic-Con: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles co-creator Kevin Eastman says Paramount and Nick have secured rights to air the original cartoon series from the 1980s.

The sole motion picture studio to brave an actor-less Comic-Con this year was Paramount which opted to show off fresh footage from its upcoming Aug. 2 Point Grey produced Nickelodeon animated feature, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem before fanboys and fangirls in a very packed Hall H. The Melrose lot is one of the dominant streamers as well, splashing outdoor wraparound building ads in the Gaslamp quarter.
