Cobra Kai topped the Nielsen streaming chart for the week of September 5 to 11, as titles from four competing streaming services surpassed 1 billion minutes of viewing for the first time.
The fifth season of Netflix’s Karate Kid reboot drew more than 1.7 billion minutes of streaming from 50 available episodes. Sony Pictures Television’s series started out as a YouTube Original before shifting to Netflix. Despite the nostalgic Gen X center of the audience, about 20% of viewers are between 18 and 34 years old, with another 35% between 35 and 49, Nielsen said.
Thor: Love and Thunder, making its debut as a no-extra-charge movie title on Disney+, collected 1.5 billion streaming minutes. Released last July, the Marvel outing grossed more than $850 million worldwide despite being overshadowed by other summer fare like Top Gun: Maverick and Jurassic World: Dominion. With Disney Plus Day a major corporate promo event in September, the service also debuted Pinocchio as a streaming-only title, drawing 930 million minutes, good for sixth place.
Prime Video’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power finished No. 4 for the week with 1.2 billion minutes of viewing, though the fact that it had only three episodes in circulation didn’t help its tally.
In the No. 5 spot was HBO Max’s House of the Dragon, with a bit more than 1 billion minutes. Across all platforms, the Game of Thrones prequel has generated huge viewership. The Nielsen streaming chart captures only streaming through a TV screen in the U.S., and its cutoff is also unfriendly to the Sunday night debuts, capturing only the first three hours each new episode is live. Despite that small window of availability, Episode 4 accounted for 27% of the program’s total viewing,

Jennifer Maas TV Business Writer “Cobra Kai” closed in on nearly 2 billion minutes viewed on Netflix in the first full week after its Season 5 launch on Sept. 9, as the streaming audience for Amazon’s “Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” and HBO’s “House of the Dragon” dipped, according to Nielsen’s newly released streaming rankings for the month-ago period. From Sept. 12-18, the first four episodes of “The Rings of Power” hit 988 million minutes viewed on Prime Video, while the first five of “House of the Dragon” landed 960 million minutes viewed on HBO Max. Meanwhile, “Cobra Kai” — which currently has five seasons and 50 episodes available for streaming on Netflix — was watched for 1.9 million minutes when counting viewership across the entire series, per Nielsen.
Daniel D'Addario Chief TV Critic As it’s gone on, Ryan Murphy’s Netflix deal has revealed how many topics fascinate him — and how rigidly fixed in the past are his manners of addressing them. Has he been able to get beyond the franchises he started on FX? Consider, for instance, his recent smash “Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story”; the surfeit of punctuation in the title seems to suggest a sublimated desire to call it what it is, another installment of the true-life “American Crime Story” in all but name. “Halston’s” gilded retelling of recent-ish celebrity culture recalled “Feud,” with the adversaries, perhaps, being the designer and his own ego. And now, with his new series “The Watcher,” Murphy has reverse-engineered an “American Horror Story,” taking a true story and finding within or beyond its nuances some Murder House melodramatics.
