‘Civil War’ Review: Alex Garland Tears America Apart, Counting on Divided Audiences to Prevent His Worst-Case Horror Show

Last week, in an interview with U.K. outlet, The Guardian, British filmmaker Alex Garland (“Civil War“) reiterated his plans to pause directing efforts for “the foreseeable future.” For some, that’s been distilled and reduced to Garland announcing formal plans to “retire” from filmmaking, something the filmmaker has taken great issues with.

Civil War,’ two publicists working on the dystopian thriller assured me that it isn’t a political film. In the movie, Kirsten Dunst plays a dogged photojournalist muscling her way through a smoldering Washington D.C., trying to document the bitter conflict between two heavily armed factions tearing America apart.

Nick Offerman plays the POTUS in the dystopian action film Civil War, but although some liken his character to Donald Trump, the actor didn’t think about him during filming.

It’s almost an ironic statement, given that contemporary political films commenting on a current political climate generally do pretty terribly at the box office; aka, a movie about Trump during the Trump administration likely would have tanked in theaters.
