Kilmarnock provided the biggest story of the opening weekend in the Premiership and had a host of top-class performers.
The midfield intensity was a key to their win with David Watson and Brad Lyons, who scored the winning goal, leading the way. Behind them, although Rangers did not offer enough, Robbie Deas, Lewis Mayo and Stuart Findlay were strong. Celtic made a successful start and Kyogo Furuhashi was terrific in getting a goal and also dropping deeper to create chances for others.
Hearts’ Yutaro Oda scored a vital opener to set Hearts up to win 2-0 against St Johnstone and had a strong impact. Although the Japanese finally got the better of Dimitar Mitov in goal, the new Saints keeper made some smart stops before conceding. Dundee got a point on open day with Luke McCowan and Lyall Cameron impressing. The latter gets the nod for securing his team’s equaliser.
Defenders dominated in the match between Livingston and Aberdeen. The Dons’ new Serbian Slobodan Rubezic was the best of them. St Mirren’s dramatic win at Hibs was a thrilling end to the weekend and Mark O’Hara was a driving force for Stephen Robinson’s side to edge Celtic’s Matt O’Riley for the third midfield spot.
