The cost of petrol is increasing again across Scotland and the rest of the UK.
The rising prices at the pumps mean that drivers are paying more to fuel up, with motorists paying up to £20 extra to fill up their tanks depending on which petrol station they visit, according to the first-ever official forecourt figures.
Fuel companies across the country have been called upon to publish up-to-date prices charges at stations to ensure a fair deal for consumers. The daily update allows customers to search online for the latest prices, finding the cheapest spot to fill up. The move may soon have statutory backing, but for now the companies have agreed to join an interim voluntary scheme which has now published its first prices for almost 4,000 forecourts up and down the UK.
Shell, BP, Esso as well as supermarket suppliers such as Morrisons, Sainsbury’s, Tesco and Asda are amongst the ten of the biggest fuel retailers joining the scheme set up by the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA).
The list now includes the latest prices from 60 per cent of the forecourts across the UK, according to the CMA.
There are already websites often used by consumers to check in on prices. But these online options often rely on user-supplied prices that can be days old. The new scheme, however, allows for real-time costs to be posted with the latest figures provided by the retailers themselves - these are correct for the most recent trading day.
