Charli XCX has signed a new record deal! The only question is...who with?
The pop icon is coming off the (very successful) cycle for her fifth album Crash - which became her first Number 1 record on the Official Albums Chart last year and ranked as one of the biggest vinyl albums of 2022 too.
Crash's modus operandi saw Charli sacrifice herself to the machinations of the major label system to become her final Big Pop Girl form, a concept that was promoted widely since Crash was the last album on her contract with Atlantic Records, the label she'd been signed to since she was 16.
Since the release of Crash - which contained the Top 40 single Beg For You with Rina Sawayama - Charli has been honest with the fact that, yes, she is working slowly on new music and was in conversations about a new recording contract, whether that be with her returning to Atlantic, or signing to another label altogether.
And now, it seems, that the wait is over. In a video for British Vogue posted yesterday, Charli revealed that she has in fact just signed a brand-new recording contract for two albums...but neglected to reveal exactly with who they will be released.
"This is my brand-new recording contract," Charli says in the clip. "I signed it yesterday. Two albums, baby! We're in business!"
The business of being a big pop girl again, yes.
And since this is Charli, baby, there was of course some playful trolling involved in the whole thing - with Ms XCX revealing she "did it on em" in a promotion of the clip, as well as her teasing the identity of her new (old?) label.
When one fan asked if Charli had signed with indie magnates Dirty Hit (who are behind the careers of The 1975, Pale Waves, Beabadoobee and others), Charli revealed that she

Owen Gleiberman Chief Film Critic The phone-call-with-the-killer sequence that opens every “Scream” film is always a tasty appetizer, one that as the characters in any “Scream” film could tell you establishes the tone for the movie in question. In “Scream VI,” that scene kicks off at the bar of a trendy restaurant in downtown Manhattan. The woman seated at the bar is a professor of cinema studies, blonde and British. As she says on the phone to her online date, who can’t seem to locate the restaurant, she’s teaching a course in slasher films (which, the way she explains it, is no stab in the dark of plausibility). Her date, a sweetly annoying dork, is able to talk her out onto the street to help him find the place, and by the time she’s walking into a dark alley we know what’s coming. (His voice lowers into that familiar mocking AM-radio-DJ growl.) In this case, though, the killer is instantly unmasked as…a college bro. He returns to his apartment, and moments later he’s the scary-movie victim, talking on the phone with the real killer.

Jem Aswad Senior Music Editor If you’ve been to enough concerts, there’s a feeling you recognize when a new-ish artist’s career is about to blast off — when the audience isn’t just singing along with the hit but with nearly every song, half of them with hands over hearts, many dressed in the artist’s merch or artist-identifying outfits, and at least a few singing emphatically, with tears and/or mascara running. That feeling isn’t always accurate, but it was present at Billie Eilish concerts in 2019 and Lorde’s club shows in 2013 and even the Killers almost 20 years ago — and without setting the bar unfairly high, it was definitely in the air Chappell Roan’s packed concert at New York’s 1,500-capacity Webster Hall on Tuesday night.

The accompanying music video was self-shot by the band – made up of Phoebe Bridgers, Lucy Dacus and Julien Baker – and edited by Bridgers’ brother Jackson.
