Tory chancellor Rishi Sunak has been dismissed as the “dude from Silicon Valley” who blamed a government computer systems for failing to increase benefits in line with inflation.
In a Commons debate on Labour plans to impose a windfall tax on energy giants, Labour’s Ed Miliband tore into the government’s reluctance to do anything about the cost of living crisis facing millions of families.
Tory MPs were ordered to vote against Labour’s amendment that would tax the profits of oil giants in order to make a £600 payment to households facing rising energy bills.
In a brutal put down of Sunak’s refusal to tackle rising household costs, the former Labour leader said the chancellor was as useful as the failed cryptocoin currency.
The Tories, Miliband said, blamed anyone but themselves for rising inflation, food and energy prices.
Miliband told MPs: “Here is a roll call of the people the party opposite are tying to frame - the Bank of England, civil servants working from home, shamefully, the British people being unable to cook properly. Yesterday, a ludicrous suggestion of one of these ministers was that people were not working enough hours.”
“And the Chancellor, who does he blame for the massive cuts to benefits? He blames the IT system. The dude from Silicon Valley, who is he trying to kid?”
“If he got his act together early enough of course he could raise benefits properly.”
The Labour politician then compared the chancellor to the online cryptocurrency which has plunged in value in recent weeks.
Miliband said: “How similar they are, the Chancellor and cryptocurrency - came out of nowhere, the value surged, looked like the future, But it’s all turned out to be one giant Ponzi scheme.”
But the chancellor refused to take on the lesson.
