Cate Blanchett Can’t Drive, Viola Davis Gives Awesome Speeches and Other Lessons From the 2022 Palm Springs Film Awards

A few weeks after Zar Amir-Ebrahimi won the Best Actress Award in Cannes for her performance as journalist Arezoo Rahimi in crime thriller Holy Spider, the Iranian-French actor flew to Melbourne, Australia, to take part in what was set to be another urgent story from an Iranian filmmaker: Noora Niasari’s debut feature Shayda. 

Elvis scooped up eight Oscar nominations on Tuesday, including Best Picture and Best Actor for Austin Butler in the title role. The good news dovetailed neatly with the birthday of director Baz Luhrmann’s wife and producing partner Catherine Martin, and their wedding anniversary, and yet tragically, it also comes just two days after the pair attended the funeral service for Elvis Presley’s daughter Lisa Marie Presley.

There were many lessons to take from the 95th Academy Award nominations. And publicists, studio executives, and personal publicists will spend the next few weeks wondering what went wrong and, more importantly, what went right.

The Santa Barbara Film Festival has today unveiled the lineup for its 38th edition, taking place in-person from February 8-18.

Cate Blanchett won at the Critics Choice Awards on Sunday, where she took the Best Actress trophy for her role in Tár. In the film, Blanchett plays Lydia Tár, a fiercely independent and world-renowned composer whose esteemed career comes crashing down around her after being accused of sexual harassment.

Vitriolic criticism from famous conductor Marin Alsop about the film Tar has provoked a reaction from the film’s star, Cate Blanchett.

Adam Sandler nudged out Tom Cruise, Ana de Armas and Eddie Redmayne got in while “The Fabelmans” stars Michelle Williams and Judd Hirsh did not and “Babylon” and “Women Talking” were nominated as the year’s best ensemble even though neither film received a single individual acting nomination.  Such were the vagaries of the 29th annual Screen Actors Guild Award nominations, which were announced on Wednesday morning in a ramshackle Instagram Live presentation by Ashley Park and Haley Lu Richardson.In most cases, the 2,000-plus randomly-selected SAG members who made up the film and television nominating committees stuck to the favorites: Austin Butler, Colin Farrell, Brendan Fraser, Cate Blanchett and Michelle Yeoh in the lead categories, Brendan Gleeson, Ke Huy Quan, Angela Bassett, Kerry Condon, Jamie Lee Curtis and Stephanie Hsu in supporting and “Babylon,” “The Banshees of Inisherin,” Everything Everywhere All at Once,” “The Fabelmans” and “Women Talking” in the ensemble category.If there were surprises in the film categories, they were that a pair of Netflix stars, Sandler and de Armas, crashed the top five.

After all the scandals and skepticism, was tonight the Golden Globes that NBC, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, and the Todd Boehly-owned dick clark productions really wanted?
