A flat in Castle Douglas is finally set to be handed over to its new owners – four years after it went on the market.
The property in the town’s clock tower was put up for sale in 2020, being sold to South of Scotland Community Housing (SOSCH) for £70,000.
More than £220,000 has been spent on refurbishing the property – which the council’s homelessness service stopped using in 2010 – with a further £56,000 coming from council funds at the start of 2023 to fix a dry rot problem.
The council’s let property officer Nik Lane told the latest meeting of the common good sub committee it had been difficult to find someone to do the work but contractors had been on site that day.
It was hoped that by the end of January work would be completed on a King Street shop that forms part of the building and the flat would be ready for the conclusion of the sale.
Clience Studio had occupied the shop on King Street but has temporarily moved to one on St Andrew Street while the work is carried out.
Once complete, the gallery will return to King Street with the St Andrew Street Shop re-let.
A report for the meeting revealed that selling the old Citizens Advice office at 3 St Andrew Street generated more than £60,000 for the common good fund.
Mr Lane said it was being turned into two flats.
A nearby building at 5 St Andrew Street, previously occupied by the Galloway Glens Landscape Partnership Team, is set to go on the rental market and could be sold if no tenant is found.
Members also agreed to allow common good land in Lochside Park to be used for a changing places toilet to go alongside the new playpark.
A public consultation may be required before “an application to the sheriff will be made for land to be alienated”.
