The inaugural annual Salon Kewpie: The Legacy Ball in Cape Town, in collaboration with the District Six Museum and GALA Queer Archive, will honour the life of queer icon, Kewpie, who passed away in 2012.
Hosted by international house mother, Cheshire Vineyard the event will present and connect the spirit of ballroom with the themes revealed in the rich historical photographic collection that captures the life of Kewpie, a queer icon from the Apartheid era, who has come to be known as the Daughter of District Six.
Salon Kewpie: The Legacy Ball will be held on 11 March 2023 at the Homecoming Centre in District Six.
Long since scattered, District Six is remembered for its unique spirit of place. This was a society that valued diversity and had a thriving and beloved queer community despite prevailing governmental oppression.
The organisers say that one of the aims of the event is “to present and educate on the tradition of ballroom — a primary driver of queer culture which arose as a safe place for queer people of colour from disadvantaged backgrounds to engage in radical self-expression”.
Ballroom originated in New York City in the 1960s. Pioneered by African American and Latin X queer and trans individuals, the balls cultivate a space in which gender expression, voguing and drag pageantry is revered and celebrated.
Featuring DJ K.Dollahz, the Kewpie Legacy Ball will bring two worlds together in a memorable night of expression and queer heritage.
“Through the lens of the relationship that existed between a trans feminine heroine and the value system of their hometown community, we are able to utilise ballroom culture as a restorative platform for the experience of marginalised bodies,” say the organisers.

IDLES, Rina Sawayama, Hot Chip and more have backed a campaign urging the UK government to act on US visa charges.Last month, the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced that it was planning to raise touring visa fees for foreign acts by 260 per cent.Under the DHS proposal, applications for a P visa – which allows acts arriving in the States to perform temporarily – would increase from the current rate of $460 (£375.23) to $1,615 (£1,317).The longer-term O work visa would also jump from $460 (£375.23) to $1,655 (£1,349).In response, the Music Managers Forum (MMF) and Featured Artists Coalition (FAC) boosted their #LetTheMusicMove campaign – originally created in June 2021 – to oppose the potential changes, emphasising that the move could result in “crippling costs for UK artists looking to tour North America”.Now, a number of touring artists have bolstered the campaign with their support.“After what we’ve been through with Brexit and the pandemic, the implications of these new visa proposals are incredibly worrying for all artists wanting to travel and perform in the US,” Sawayama said.“I travel with 15+ crew on a tight margin, and any increase in costs sadly gets passed onto concert goers through higher ticket prices, which is not fair. Live music should be democratic and accessible and this is just another blow to the arts sector and the experience of concert goers.”Adam Devonshire of IDLES added: “Britain is renowned for its hugely profitable musical exports, however with pointless and costly restrictions such as these, British artists will struggle to make a name for themselves in the US, which would be a huge shame.
old friend Bill Clinton to help him with his Oscar campaigns, a new book has claimed.Michael Schulman’s book “Oscar Wars: A History of Hollywood in Gold, Sweat, and Tears” used sourcing from a former Miramax employee to dive deep into the disgraced producer’s Academy Award exploits. The anonymous staffer revealed that Weinstein, 70, asked Clinton, 76, for ideas to help promote Billy Bob Thornton’s 1996 film “Sling Blade,” according to an excerpt shared by IndieWire. Ultimately, Thornton scored a nomination for Best Actor a year later and won Best Adapted Screenplay for penning the script, which was set in Clinton’s native Arkansas.“I was so appalled that the president of the United States would spend half an hour with us on the phone,” the Miramax worker alleged.
