Cannes Film Festival is bracing for a tumultuous 77th edition. As wars rage in Gaza and Ukraine, attendees and organizers anticipate protests, politically charged speeches and pins and flags that signal solidarity with Palestinian civilians, Israeli hostages and Ukrainians looking for more military assistance from the West as they try to fend off the Russian invasion. But if the festival has its way, there will be none of that.
The city of Cannes preemptively banned protests along the Croisette and its surroundings during the 11-day festival. Likewise, the festival hired private security to trail the Competition jurors including Eva Green and Lily Gladstone to keep activists from approaching them. And while the festival was initially amenable to a plan for Arab filmmakers to wear pins showing support for the Palestinians under siege in Gaza, it changed course and will ban them as well as pins that pay homage to the more than 100 remaining Israeli hostages who were kidnapped by Hamas during the Oct.

“There is nothing that justifies the killing of children in Gaza. or anywhere,” Omar Sy, one of the jurors, recently shared on Instagram in a post urging elected leaders to take action to try to stop Israel’s ground offensive in the Gaza city of Rafa. Over the years, the high-wattage festival has allowed some political and activist events.

No one really expected this year’s Cannes Film Festival to replicate the stellar showing of last year at the Oscars where three official selections – Killers Of The Flower Moon, Anatomy Of A Fall, and The Zone Of Interest – took an unprecedented three of the ten slots for Best Picture and a total of 20 nominations and 3 wins between them. How many times can the French catch lightning in a bottle like that achievement? Who thought 2019 could be equaled or topped when Parasite became the first Palme d’Or winner to also take the Best Picture Oscar since Marty did it in 1955, and where Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon A Time In Hollywood (also an official selection that year) went on to ten nominations and two Oscar wins?
“We really led with our hearts for everything we watched,” said 77th Cannes Film Festival Jury President Greta Gerwig on what was a fiercely competitive year.
Sean Baker’s “Anora,” a comic but devastating Brooklyn odyssey about a sex worker who marries the son of a wealthy Russian oligarch, has won the Cannes Film Festival’s top award, the Palme d’Or.Baker accepted the prize with his movie’s star, Mikey Madison, watching in the audience at the Cannes closing ceremony Saturday. The win for “Anora” marks a new high point for Baker, the director of “The Florida Project.” It’s also, remarkably, the fifth straight Palme d’Or won by indie distributor Neon, following “Parasite,” “Titane,” “Triangle of Sadness” and last year’s winner, “Anatomy of a Fall.”“I don’t really know what’s happening right now,” said Baker. While “Anora” was arguably the most acclaimed film of the festival, its win was a slight surprise.
CANNES – After 12 days of screenings, the Cannes Film Festival has drawn to a close. That means it’s time for Greta Gerwig and her jury to reveal the winners of the competition section of the festival.

Demi Moore appeared to also scold the audience while introducing Cher on stage at the amfAR Cinema Against AIDS Cannes Gala.“I’m going to see if this is the moment we’ve all been waiting for,” Moore said in a video shared by Vanity Fair’s Ramin Setoodeh via X, formerly Twitter. “I’m just making sure that you’re really, really with me.”“Because this incredible woman that I’m about to introduce — she’s a Grammy winner, an Oscar winner, an Emmy winner.”The “A Few Good Men” actress then paused and appeared to address a heckler.“Are you an Emmy winner over there in the back of the room?” She asked an attendee in the back of the audience.
By the time we meet them, Chatila and Reda already are down in the lower depths. Cousins from Palestine, they have spent much of their lives living as refugees on the run. Having made it as far as Athens, a kind of holding zone for people from the Middle East trying to slip into Europe, they are trying to scrape together money to get to Germany.
It has been a big week for the beloved 1964 musical, The Umbrellas Of Cherbourg at the Cannes Film Festival where it won the 1964 Palme d’Or and went on to international acclaim and five Oscar nominations, plus served as one of the key inspirations for Damien Chazelle’s Oscar winning La La Land.
transforming the red carpet of the 77th annual Cannes Film Festival into a chichi bridal aisle. And the radiantly white regalia left online onlookers saying “yes” to each dress.
There has been a lot of noise at this year’s Cannes Film Festival about France’s accelerated MeToo movement, particularly by female cinema stars leading the charge. Paolo Sorrentino has done a wide range of films but until his most personal, The Hand Of God two years ago (a prize winner in Venice) he had not returned to Naples, the land of his youth except for the very first feature he made, 2001’s One Man Up. Since then though he has been to Cannes with his films 6 times, and his impressive list of movies have included The Consequences Of Love, Il Divo, Loro, and his Oscar winning The Great Beauty. There have been more mixed reactions for his starry English language films as well like Youth and This Must Be The Place, but Italy seems to drive his creative mojo and may be closest to his heart is the current phase of his filmmaking career when he has found new inspiration by going back to his youth, first in The Hand Of God which closely reflected his own coming of age in Naples, and now his latest, Parthenope which reflects the youth he wished he had experienced. Instead he moved away to a whole new career in film (that was indicated at the end of Hand Of God). It had its World Premiere at the Cannes Film Festival Tuesday night.

When Adi (Ciprian Chiujdea) is beaten up outside the one dance club in the village where he grew up, his father takes up the cudgels, chivvying the local police chief into finding out who did it. It would be obvious enough to anyone but dad Dragoi (Bogdan Dumitrache) that this is a straight-up case of gay-bashing, which would seem to signal that Emanuel Parvu’s Cannes Competition title Three Kilometers to the End of the World, a slice of Romanian life, will be a worthy but familiar story of a boy’s coming out to a hostile world. Indeed, bloodied Adi with his black eyes and traumatic lesions is soon being punished, locked in his room by his parents as his desperate mother prays to the icons on the wall for guidance. We have undoubtedly been down this donkey-track before.
