Matt Damon Talks ‘Avatar’ Offer, Missing Out on $250 Million: I ‘Desperately Wanted to Work’ With James Cameron but ‘Couldn’t Leave’ Bourne

Zack Sharf Digital News Director Matt Damon will never be able to escape his decision to turn down James Cameron’s 2009 space epic “Avatar,” which remains the highest-grossing movie of all time with $2.9 billion worldwide (unadjusted for inflation). Damon turned down the film despite an offer that included receiving 10% of the box office back end, which would’ve meant a $250 million payday for him. During a recent interview with Chris Wallace, the “Avatar” offer got brought up again and prompted Damon to explain his thought process behind tossing it off. “I’m sure it’s the most money an actor ever turned down, you know?” Damon said about his decision, stressing that he did not want to get out of his contract for another Jason Bourne movie at the time.

China Box Office: ‘Mission Impossible – Dead Reckoning’ Opens in Third Place Behind Local Duo

Patrick Frater Asia Bureau Chief China’s box office weekend was marked more by the tussle for top spot between “Never Say Never” and “Chang An” than the entry of “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One.” The Tom Cruise-starring U.S. blockbuster was the highest new release title, but landed in third place with an opening score of $25.9 million. The weekend’s top-ranked film was “Never Say Never,” a holdover title that scored $46.1 million. Lightchaser Animation-produced “Chang An San Wan Li” (aka “Chang An 30,000 Miles”) earned a shade less, at $43.9 million, according to data from consultancy Artisan Gateway. After 11 days of official release (plus substantial previews), “Never Say Never,” written and directed by actor Wang Baoqiang (“Lost in Thailand,” “Detective Chinatown”) has already become one of the biggest hits of the year. Its cumulative stands at $212 million. “Chang An” has accumulated $96.1 million in nine days.

Korea Box Office: ‘Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One’ is Hollywood’s Second Best Opening This Year

Patrick Frater Asia Bureau Chief Tom Cruise has become a regular visitor to South Korea and, while his latest visit was more than a week ago, the impact of his efforts appeared to endure. His ‘Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning’ got off to the second strongest start at the Korean box office of any Hollywood movie released this year. The film grossed $9.75 million between Friday and Sunday, according to Kobis, the tracking service operated by the Korean Film Council (Kofic). That represented a 60% market share, earned from some 2,400 screens. In its full opening five days (plus previews), it earned $14.2 million.

Box Office: ‘Mission: Impossible 7’ Falls Short of Expectations With $56 Million Debut, Collects $80 Million Over Five Days

Rebecca Rubin Film and Media Reporter “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One” topped domestic box office charts while falling short of initial expectations. Tom Cruise’s latest blockbuster collected $56.2 million between Friday and Sunday, a lackluster start for a movie that cost nearly $300 million before marketing. Heading into the weekend, Paramount and Skydance’s action-adventure was projected to set a new franchise record with $60 million or more. Instead, ticket sales landed behind 2018’s “Mission: Impossible – Fallout” ($61 million) and 2000’s “Mission: Impossible II” ($57.8 million), which remain as the top openings in the 27-year-old series.

Box Office: ‘Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One’ Cruising to Projected $78 Million Debut

J. Kim Murphy Paramount’s “Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One” is defusing a bit at the domestic box office, readjusting for an estimated $78 million gross over its five-day opening. That’d be a substantial chunk behind projections headed into the weekend, which had the Tom Cruise action sequel hoping for a $90 million. Some in the industry were expecting a “Top Gun: Maverick” halo effect for “Dead Reckoning” after last year’s legacy sequel positively ignited movie theaters, rocketing through the summer to become the fifth-highest grossing domestic release of all-time. That doesn’t seem to be the case though, as “Mission” seems to be landing around the solid numbers typical for its franchise.

Rebecca Rubin Film and Media Reporter “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One” kicked off to $15.5 million on opening day. Paramount and Skydance’s big-budget tentpole, which is the seventh installment in the Tom Cruise-led action franchise, is projected to collect at least $60 million between Friday and Sunday.

Box Office: ‘Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning’ Aims for $90 Million Five-Day Debut

Rebecca Rubin Film and Media Reporter Tom Cruise’s mission, should he choose to accept it, is to save the summer box office… again. After a lackluster start to popcorn season (“The Flash,” “Indiana Jones” and “Elemental,” we’re looking at you), Paramount’s action-adventure “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One” is hoping to bring people back to movie theaters across the globe. The big-budget tentpole is projected to collect at least $60 million between Friday and Sunday. Anything more than that would cement a new opening weekend benchmark for the long-running, globe-trotting spy series. “Mission: Impossible – Fallout” currently holds the record with $61 million, followed by 2000’s “Mission: Impossible II” with $57.8 million.

Paramount+ Isn’t ‘Writing Off’ International Shows Anytime Soon as It Marks One Year of Global Originals (EXCLUSIVE)

Manori Ravindran Executive Editor of International Last June, Paramount Global pulled out all the stops at London’s spacey Outernet venue for its streaming launch in the U.K. The studio flew in 21 stars including Michelle Pfeiffer and Sylvester Stallone to pitch their Paramount+ originals to a wide-eyed audience. No expense, it seemed, was spared for the service’s splashy kick-off. One year later, as Paramount Global sheds assets Stateside and offloads original programs in a bid to save money, that investment in international seems to be paying off. The company’s most robust signs of growth appear to be from its international streaming division, which has penetrated more than 45 markets to date, spanning Western Europe, Australia, South America and Canada. Currently, 85 local originals have been earmarked for the platform (some are already on the service, while others are in production or recently greenlit) — and those commissions aren’t going anywhere, according to top brass.

Candace Cameron Bure shuts down claims she tried to get Miss Benny's gay character on 'Fuller House' fired

Candace Cameron Bure is firing back after being accused of homophobia. In a new TikTok video, Miss Benny claims Bure attempted to have her removed from "Fuller House." Miss Benny, who was born male and played a gay character named Casey on the show before coming out as transgender last month, never mentioned Bure by name but implied that she did not want a queer character on "Fuller House." The allegations stemmed from a video, shared earlier this week, in which Miss Benny mentioned experiencing homophobia on the show's set.

Candace Cameron Bure Denies Asking ‘Fuller House’ Writers to Remove Queer Character: We ‘Always Welcomed a Wide Range of Characters’

Zack Sharf Digital News Director Candace Cameron Bure is pushing back against an accusation that she asked for a queer character to be removed from “Fuller House,” the “Full House” sequel series that aired for five seasons and 75 episodes on Netflix between 2016 and 2020. Miss Benny, the current star of Netflix’s “Glamorous,” appeared in two episodes of “Fuller House” Season 4 as Casey, the franchise’s first openly queer character. Miss Benny recently posted a TikTok that heavily implied Bure was homophobic behind the scenes of “Fuller House.” One of Miss Benny’s followers asked the star on TikTok, “Fuller house? Who was homophobic was it Candace?” Miss Benny responded in a TikTok that included #candacecure in the video description but did not verbally call her out by name. The actor said “one of the Tanner sisters” was “very publicly not for the girls,” which for many viewers meant either Candace Cameron Bure (who played D.J. Tanner-Fuller) or Jodie Sweetin (who played Stephanie Tanner) were homophobic.

Candace Cameron Bure Responds to Miss Benny's Claim She Tried to Have Queer 'Fuller House' Role Removed

Candace Cameron Bure is addressing claims that she attempted to get the first queer character on removed from the show.On Thursday, Miss Benny posted a video to TikTok in which she claimed that she was told «one of the Tanner sisters» wanted to have her role axed back when she was playing Casey during the show's fourth season.«I was on, I played Casey, the first gay character on the franchise,» Miss Benny shared in her post. «One of the Tanner sisters is very publicly 'not for the girls' if that makes sense? [And] I remember I got sat down by the writers and the studio to basically warn me how this person, allegedly, was trying to get the character removed and not have a queer character on the show.»Miss Benny — who never used Bure's name directly in her video — went on to claim, «I was also sort of warned and prepared that this person's fan base might be encouraged to target me specifically.»«So, to this day — despite working on the show every day for two weeks straight — I have only had a conversation with one of the Tanner sisters,» Miss Benny claimed. In response to her TikTok post, Bure released a statement to ET denying that she ever attempted to get the role axed.«I never asked Miss Benny’s character to be removed from  and did not ask the writers, producers or studio executives to have queer characters on the show,» Bure shared in her statement.
