Call the Midwife fans bid an emotional farewell to midwife Trixie Franklin in a recent episode of the BBC show, as the nurse flew to Portofino to look after her sick aunt. That’s because in real life the actress that plays her, Helen George, took some time out of filming the much-loved series to give birth to her own baby - second daughter Lark. Helen and her former co-star Jack Ashton welcomed little Lark in November, a baby sister for their older daughter Wren, four.
And the Call the Midwife cast and crew have been very open about how they kept Helen’s growing bump hidden during filming for series eleven. Get exclusive celebrity stories and fabulous photoshoots straight to your inbox with OK!'s daily newsletter.
Opening up about the ‘clever trickery’ the team thought up, the mum of two said costumes became invaluable in hiding her pregnancy. Helen explained: “The fashion for Trixie this year has been very 60s, very fun.
It's been continuing on the Jackie O theme with some lovely twin sets.” She continued: “But I am pregnant this year, so we are trying to use some clever trickery in the costumes to try and hide the bump slightly because it's not really appropriate that Trixie should be pregnant in this series.” Helen added: “So poor Claire the costume designer has been working hard to try and get some wonderfully fashionable suits that hide the ever growing bump.” The filming tricks didn’t go unnoticed with eagle-eyed viewers who were tuning in from their sofas, either. Many have taken to social media to say they’ve enjoyed trying to spot the way Helen hid her pregnancy as the series went on and praised the team for getting inventive.
