An intrepid Scottish climber has gone viral on TikTok after uploading a "terrifying" clip captured atop a treacherous mountain ridge.
Jonathan Wilson, 31, from Crieff, shared a jaw-dropping clip of himself doing a solo climb along the Aonach Eagach ridge in the Scottish Highlands on the northern edge of Glen Coe. The ridge is famous for being the narrowest on the British mainland, making for a climb that is as thrilling as it is perilous.
The video, which was posted on January 2, shows Jonathan traversing the narrow peak of the ridge, with hair-raising drops on either side. Soundtracked by 'Make Me Smile (Come Up and See Me)' by Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel, the clip shows just how dangerous climbing can be for those who are not adequately prepared like Jonathan.
Alongside the dizzying clip itself, Jonathan wrote: "New Years solo along Aonach Eagach ridge". Since being uploaded, it has received more than 100,000 views and almost 3,000 likes.
Speaking to the Daily Record, Jonathan commented: "Had been winter climbing with a friend on Hogmanay and wanted to do something special to celebrate the new year. All the forecasts were saying low wind and clear summits for New Year’s Day, had been wanting to get the ridge done in winter for a while."
"Have a lot of experience in the hills finishing the Munro round in 2022. Previously doing the route a couple of summers ago, decent amount of summer 'trad climbing' and winter climbing so was prepared for the route, even took a spare climbing axe just in case.
"Started off in clag which thankfully cleared just after the first summit and lovely views of the ridge opened up. Safe to say wasn’t expecting it to blow up on socials."
