Bonfires and fireworks displays in Rochdale in 2022

Shocking video footage has captured screams as lit fireworks were launched towards a tram in Manchester city centre on Sunday (October 16). Footage taken from Exchange Square, outside the Arndale, show the fireworks going off, shooting along the ground and even beneath a tram.

It's a subject that's troubling everyone from industry leaders in Greater Manchester to the likes of Major Tim Peake and Carol Vorderman.

Mayor Andy Burnham has said people need to 'cut Manchester City Council some slack' over their decision to axe the city's Bonfire Night celebrations due to 'escalating costs'.

The council has confirmed that its own bonfire events, including the huge celebration at Heaton Park, will NOT be reintroduced this year following the two-year lay-off during the Covid-19 pandemic.
