Bolton Wanderers see Kyle Dempsey as the final piece in their January transfer window puzzle but will move on to other targets if Gillingham ultimately turn down the chance of doing a deal.
Wanderers are keen on bringing in the Gills captain to their ranks in central midfield and have submitted bids to the Priestfield outfit for his services.
Dempsey's contract at the Gills runs out this summer and so if he does not sign fresh terms, this month would be the last opportunity for the Kent club to obtain a transfer fee for the midielder or risk losing him for nothing in a few months' time.

Wanderers saw a first bid quickly turned down but have returned with another offer for Dempsey, which remains with the Gills for consideration.
Ian Evatt believes the offer made is 'reasonable and fair' and presents a good deal for all parties.
But Evatt admits that if Gillingham do not want to do a deal, then Wanderers have other targets in mind which they will turn to in that case.
Evatt told the Manchester Evening News: “There’s always a time limit but we feel like we’re being reasonable and fair and it’s a good deal for both parties, so we’ll see how that develops.
"At the moment, he’s still a Gillingham player and while he’s that, we respect that.
“But we’re doing what we can to make things happen and if it doesn't happen then we’ll move on to other targets. Of course, we have them.”
This January, Wanderers began their business off with the acquistion of striker Dion Charles from Accrington Stanley on a permanent deal.
That signing was swiftly followed a few days later with the arrival of Marlon Fossey on loan from Fulham.
