The BBC are set to create a "woke" new soap to reflect modern Britain and rival EastEnders. A day before BBC Three's return from online-only to regular television channels - with a line up of big stars including Gemma Collinswho celebrates turning 41 today - the network's controller Fiona Campbell has revealed her ambition for the new show.
In the hopes of "showcasing" a particular location in "all its glory", Fiona plans for the soap to be set away from the bustle of London and to only recruit cast and writers from social media. "What would it look like? It could be somewhere very specific in modern Britain — Derry or Belfast, Aberdeen or Newcastle," she said.
Fiona added: "I want to showcase a locality in all its glory. I'd like to provide a platform for the cast of the future." "You can see how many stars came out of early EastEnders." She also expressed hopes for the soap to reflect BBC's focus on "how tough it is to be in your teens and early 20s today".The ambitious new soap comes from Fiona believing that young people, who noticebaly favour streaming services, are still seeking "shared experience" television.
BBC Three will return to television screens from Tuesday, February 1, after media regulator Ofcom gave the green light for its comeback in September last year. As well as Gemma Collins, Stacey Dooley will front a new cooking competition, Zara McDermott hopes her dating show could rival Love Island, and there's all new Ru Paul's Drag Race: UK Versus the World.
Meanwhile, struggling EastEnders is set to face competition from Emmerdale and Coronation Street after ITV confirmed the two soaps would be moving to a new time slot. Emmerdale will move to 7.30pm, while Corrie will have three hour-long episodes on
