Bayern Munich CEO Oliver Kahn has admitted that the German club went to their "financial limits" to try and sign Erling Haaland ahead of him joining Manchester City last year.
The Norwegian international, whose move to City was first agreed exactly a year ago today, was at the centre of a transfer tug-of-war before the Blues won the race for his signature, following two-and-a-half outstanding years at Borussia Dortmund. He netted 86 goals in just 89 games for the German outfit, meaning he was a target for just about every big-name European club ahead of last summer's transfer window.
City, of course, won the race for his signature, signing him for a fee understood to be in the region of £51million. He has since repaid just about every bit of that transfer fee, scoring an astonishing 51 goals in his debut season in England so far, as well as chipping in with eight assists.

Bayern, who previously raided Dortmund in 2014 to sign former goal-getter-in-chief Robert Lewandowski, attempted to sign Haaland ahead of Dortmund reaching an agreement with City, but were, according to Kahn, not prepared to break their own financial rules to get a deal over the line.
"We tried everything for Erling Haaland one year ago and went to our financial limits," Kahn told Sport Bild.
"We had to decide: do we want to break our wage structure? We weren't ready for that. That's not Bayern-like."
