The government has awarded Avanti West Coast a new long-term contract to run services between Manchester and London. Avanti, which replaced Virgin Trains in December 2019, had been monitored by the government after passengers faced a host of problems last year.
There were concerns over trains being cancelled, passengers being unable to book tickets in advance and the number of services being cut between Piccadilly and London Euston, which were later restored. Avanti was issued a short-term contract by the Department for Transport (DfT) last October while the government monitored its performance.
The operator was issued another six-month deal in March this year, and now a fresh deal has been announced by the government this morning (September 19). It comes as the DfT says Avanti has reduced the proportion of trains cancelled to 'as low as 1.1% over the past year'.

Transport Secretary Mark Harper said: “The routes Avanti West Coast operate provide vital connections, and passengers must feel confident that they can rely on the services to get them where they need to be at the right time. Over the past year, short-term contracts were necessary to rebuild the timetable and reduce cancellations.
“Now Avanti are back on track, providing long-term certainty for both the operator and passengers will best ensure that improvements continue.” Avanti runs services on the West Coast Mainline, which also runs services stopping in Wigan, Stockport, Macclesfield, Wilmslow and Warrington.
