When Ashley Cain's beloved daughter Azaylia passed away at the age of eight months in April 2021, the dad-of-one was left in pieces. Spending every day with his family, he struggled to come to terms with the gaping hole left behind by his baby girl. Less than a year later, he was dealt yet another blow as he was told his grandmother had died, joining "the angels in paradise", just minutes before he was due to head into the very first Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins challenge.
Speaking exclusively to OK! about the moment he found out, which will not be seen on screen, Ashley shared: "On that first episode, I got a phone call from home telling me that I lost my grandma, then we had to go straight to the first challenge. She passed away and they didn't air that..." The star was faced with a choice: go home and grieve two losses or stay and work through his emotions through gruelling tasks in the protected desert area of Wadi Rum in the Middle Eastern kingdom of Jordan. "I had the option to pull out the first day or continue the show," he explained.
"Afterwards, when I got my head around losing my grandma, I said 'No, I'm here. I've got to do it properly. I don't want to cheat.
I don't want people to make exceptions for me, because in life you don't get exceptions made for you. "'No one cares about your excuses. So I'm not going to have any excuses right now, while I'm in here.'" Ashley said the producers ultimately called him to let him know of their decision not to air the heart wrenching scenes, which would have seen him talking about his beloved Nana.
