It may be over two months away, but for many people, their Christmas planning is well underway. And with the nights getting longer and temperatures beginning to drop, thoughts are turning to cosy days off and precious time with family and friends this festive period.
There are always three bank holidays over the Christmas and New Year period - for Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day. They are typically on those days themselves, however, if those occasions fall on a weekend, a substitute day, normally the next Monday, is designated a bank holiday to ensure workers get an extra day off.
This year Christmas Eve falls on a Saturday, and Christmas Day on a Sunday. That means Boxing Day, Monday, December 26, is the next bank holiday however Tuesday, December 27 has also been designated one with Christmas Day being at the weekend.

It means those working Monday to Friday will get at least four consecutive days off around the festive period.
New Year's Day also falls on a Sunday meaning the first bank holiday of 2023 is on Monday, January 2 reports Chronicle Live. Following that the new bank holidays are at Easter, next year being celebrated in early April.

This year there was additional bank holiday on the day of Queen Elizabeth II's state funeral.
Next year there may also be an extra bank holiday for the coronation of King Charles III. Reports have suggested that this could take place on Saturday June 3 and that it would be the centerpiece of several days of celebration to mark the beginning of the new monarch's reign.
