Latina actress Ariana DeBose will host the 2022 Tony AwardsAriana Debose to star in queer Latinx take on ‘My Best Friend’s Wedding’A post shared by Ariana DeBose (@arianadebose)In an appearance on the People Every Day podcast, she discussed her opinion on labels and what matters most to her. While her sexuality and race are important to her, DeBose explained that the world has grown and that people are now more ready to embrace each other no matter their labels. “I prefer the term human because your humanity can be described in a myriad of ways, but it does not change the fact that you are human,” she said.
“The fullness of who you are, what it’s like to be queer, out, Latina, Afro-Latina, biracial, or multiracial, however you want to identify... we are moving towards a space where I think it is now more widely accepted to hear all of those labels wrapped up into one person.” When DeBose was awarded the Best Supporting Actress Oscar, she delivered one of the most emotional speeches of the evening, nailing down the progress that’s been made over the years and how the art we make nowadays is more reflective of the world.
“Imagine this little girl in the backseat of a white Ford Focus,” she said at the ceremony. “Look into her eyes, you see a queer — openly queer — woman of color, Afro-Latina who found her strength in life through art, and that’s what I believe we are here to celebrate.”A post shared by Ariana DeBose (@arianadebose)Ariana DeBose will be hosting this year’s Tony Awards and was recently named as one of Time Magazine’s Most Influential People

Jenelle Riley Deputy Awards, Features EditorWhen Lorne Michaels first heard the pitch for “Schmigadoon!,” the comedic love letter to the Golden Age musicals of the 1940s and 50s, he didn’t have to look far for his leading lady – he offered it to “Saturday Night Live” star Cecily Strong. Asked why, Michaels simply states: “I didn’t think of anyone else.”Having seen the show, the first season of which premiered last year on Apple TV Plus, it’s obvious why Strong was the right match for Melissa Gimble, a New York City doctor who finds herself and boyfriend Josh Skinner (Keegan-Michael Key) trapped in a mystical land, only able to leave when they find true love.

Tony Awards returned to Radio City Music Hall, where relaxed mask mandates made it easier than ever (OK, easier than last year’s ceremony) to spot the stars mixing and mingling during Broadway’s biggest night. For some, it was an opportunity to reunite with old friends; for others, it was a rare chance to meet luminaries they’ve only admired from afar. Before the broadcast began, “Spring Awakening” co-stars Lea Michele and Jonathan Groff walked through the front door holding hands.

Gordon Cox Theater EditorBroadway celebrated its first full season after the COVID lockdown with the 75th annual Tony Awards, hosted by a newly minted Oscar winner and spotlighting stage work that included a media-darling frontrunner (“A Strange Loop”), a historical pop confection (“Six”), a King of Pop bio-musical (“MJ”) and an epic look at the roots of American capitalism (“The Lehman Trilogy”). Much of the ceremony played out as expected, but as ably hosted by “Hamilton” alum Ariana DeBose, the night still provided plenty of moments for theater fans to remember.(1) Early wins for “Six and “MJ” prepped the audience for a night of surprises — which didn’t quite materialize.A number of Tony predictions (including ours) suggested “Six” had a shot at the award for Best Score, so that win, in itself, wasn’t much of a surprise.
Tony Awards. On Sunday night, almost nobody at Radio City Music Hall bothered to stand up for the late Stephen Sondheim. After a far too modest tribute to the legendary composer/lyricist of “West Side Story” “Gypsy,” “Sweeney Todd,” “Into The Woods,” “A Little Night Music” and many others, who died in November at age 91, sung by Bernadette Peters, only a handful of show people begrudgingly got to their feet. For one of the greatest musical theater composers of all time. Who gave his entire life to Broadway.
