In the end, Antony got his wish and Ajax received an Eredivisie record fee for his services — after also raking in £47m for Lisandro Martinez from United. Describing the days leading up to his United transfer, Antony detailed his unsteady emotions.
“It was difficult, I was anxious,” he admitted to Sky Sports. “I couldn’t wait to get here and put the shirt on. There were sleepless nights and difficult moments at Ajax as well.
“Everyone knows, I was in contact with the people here. I’m thankful to Man United for their persistence, for their faith, wanting to sign me and giving me hope that it would be possible.
“I’m really happy. I feel fulfilled being at the club and wearing this shirt.” Antony started Thursday’s 1-0 loss to Real Sociedad in the Europa League and is expected to play a role in this week’s clash with Sheriff Tiraspol in Moldova.
