Alison Hammond was reduced to tears on Friday 4 March while hosting This Morning during the show's Dear Deidre segment. A viewer called to chat to Deidre Sanders about her daughter's eating disorder, and the hardships the family were facing as a result. Alison, 47, then proceeded to speak about her own battles, where she called on the NHS to do more for those with obesity as she called it a "disease".
"I've had obesity all my life," she candidly revealed, before breaking down in tears. Alison continued: "What it is is your regulation system is out of whack, so obviously you can't control wanting to eat all the time, and stuff like that. "What people don't realise is that obesity is a disease.
You can't help wanting to eat all the time." She added that she feels "people look down on people" because they're "so big", when it's something they can't control. Addressing the NHS, Alison said: "The NHS needs to see it as a disease. People help people who are anorexic, but they don't help people who are overweight.That's why so many people turn to surgery and things like that, because we don't know what to do." Alison went on to be comforted by her co-host Dermot O'Leary, 48, as well as Diedre herself who got up from her seat to give Alison a warm embrace. Producers then skipped to an ad break.

This Morning host Alison Hammond apologised to her co-stars and viewers after her phone rang live on air.The blunder came during a viewer call in with the ITV show’s resident agony aunt Deirdre Sanders. As Deirdre was giving a female viewer advice on feeling low after giving birth to a baby girl, a loud ringtone cut through the studio. Viewers then saw 47 year old Alison scrambling to turn it off, as she said: “I'm so sorry everyone, I'm so sorry.” Deirdre glanced over at Alison, before smiling and continuing to help the caller by telling her to confide in her mum about what she was experiencing.
