The Utility Hut South of Scotland League champs faced Cupar Hearts in their first ever Scottish Cup clash.
But, in front of a big crowd at Maryfield Park, it was the Fife side which progressed after a 5-0 victory.
Clark said: “We had ITV News there on Thursday night which was a wee bit of fun for the boys but maybe the build-up got too much for some of them.
“The only person we could probably give pass marks to is the goalkeeper Taylor Hall.
“He pulled off some great saves in the first half and kept the score down. I went over it and over it in my head on Saturday night to see if we could do anything different but the players didn’t perform.
“We did our homework on them, we watched them, we thought we knew about them. We knew it would be a tough game but we still thought it would be a winnable tie.
“We relayed all that to the players but to be honest, and it’s not very often I say it, the players didn’t turn up. The goals they gave away were horrendous at the time.
“I don’t say it very often but I think they’ve got to take it on the chin and realise they didn’t turn up. We picked the correct team, they just never turned up and got beaten by a far better team on the day.”
The visitors led 2-0 at the break thanks to a brace from Liam Craig.
Stevie Harris scored just before the hour mark to all but kill off Vale’s hopes, Lewis McGlashan scoring twice in the final 20 minutes to complete the rout.
Vale now look to bounce back this weekend when they head west to face Stranraer reserves.
Clark said: “We’ll need to have a couple of good training sessions this week and take things from there.
“Hopefully come Saturday
