Aaron Sorkin ‘Really Thrilled’ at His First Golden Globes Directing Nomination for ‘Chicago 7’

Netflix said Thursday that it is making Aaron Sorkin’s Oscar-buzzed movie The Trial of the Chicago 7 available for free on for 48 hours this week to commemorate the 51st anniversary of the verdict in the trial at the center of the film. The news comes as Chicago 7 has been building momentum this awards season with five Golden Globe nominations, three SAG Awards noms and named one of AFI’s 10 best films of the year.

Golden Globes 2021 nominations are in, and there’s some good news. This year, three women received nominations in the prestigious Best Director category, breaking a five-year streak of male-dominated nods: Regina King for One Night in Miami, Emerald Fennell for Promising Young Woman and Chloé Zhao for Nomadland.

For the first time in the history of the Golden Globe awards, more than one woman has been nominated in the best director category in any one year. Chloe Zhao (Nomadland), Emerald Fennell (Promising Young Woman) and Regina King (One Night in Miami) were all nominated in the category.

This year’s Golden Globes took a leap forward in representation terms with women landing three of the five nods in its Best Director Motion Picture field.

The nominations for the 78th annual Golden Globe Awards left much to be desired when it came to representation and inclusion (no love for Da 5 Bloods, I May Destroy You, really?) but there were some strides worth celebrating when it came to diverse nominees. One notable nod was for Nomadland filmmaker Chloe Zhao who became the first director of Asian descent to receive a Golden Globe nomination.
