A report into the death of a young female soldier says relentless sexual harassment by her boss contributed to her taking her own life. Royal Artillery Gunner Jaysley Beck, 19, took her own life in December 2021 and was found dead at Larkhill Camp in Wiltshire.
A service inquiry report into her death found an “an intense period of unwelcome behaviour” and said “it is almost certain this was a causal factor in her death". As reported in the Mirror, the report was published on Wednesday and it described how behaviour from her immediate boss continued for two months before her death.
The report added: “It appears that it continued to affect her and had taken a significant toll on her mental resilience and well-being."
Jaysley's boss and everyone else in the report is not named but the Army investigation found he wanted a relationship with her though she did not reciprocate his feelings and had a boyfriend. Her mother, from Oxen Park in Cumbria, said months of harassment had left her feeling "down".
More than 1,000 WhatsApp messages and voicemails were sent to Jaysley by her boss in October 2021. The following month this increased to more than 3,500. She was found dead in her room at Larkhill Camp following a party 10 days before Christmas.
While she had tried to be understanding as she intially regarded her boss as a friend, she messages him in the weeks before her death to say: “I can’t handle it any more. It’s weighing me down.”
The family’s lawyer, Emma Norton, from the Centre for Military Justice, said: “It’s very significant that the Army is admitting that the sexual harassment this young woman was subjected to in the months before she died was a causal factor in her death. I am not aware of another case where this has been
