It would be very easy for a promising youngster to feel angry at having been released by Manchester United, especially having been told the devastating news over Zoom.
Instead, it is credit to Ethan Hamilton that he saw the end of his nine-year association as the perfect chance to launch the next chapter of his promising career, which now sees him as a key figure for Accrington Stanley.
Hamilton, 23, first arrived at United as a 12-year-old when he was spotted playing for prestigious Edinburgh club Hutchinson Vale, the same club where compatriot Darren Fletcher started his own youth career.
Despite being Edinburgh-born, Hamilton grew up as a huge Celtic fan, one who idolised the scoring talents of Henrik Larsson before appreciating the abilities of midfield maestros Shunsuke Nakamura and Scott Brown.
At the time, Hamilton was attracting plenty of interest, but he only had eyes for United, effectively becoming a youth-team player as he spent four years travelling to the club during school holidays before starting his scholarship at the club when he was 16.
"I originally moved to digs to begin with, and then my gran moved down with me for the first year," Hamilton told MEN Sport of those first years at United. "Then my mum moved down after that.
"You look at someone like Dave Bushell, they are good role models. They make you feel so welcome. The people who were amazing when you were younger and you could not see anything else, all you wanted to do was be there and train. It was brilliant."
The Scottish midfielder continued to impress at youth level as he continued his steady development, quickly becoming a key figure at U18s level.
