Comments made by Jose Mourinho about Manchester United flop Alexis Sanchez came back to haunt the coach and his Roma team in Coppa Italia last night.
It was the charismatic Portuguese who signed Sanchez for United from Premier League rivals Arsenal in 2018.
However, that proved to be a match made far from heaven as the Chilean was unable to conjure up his best form for the Old Trafford giants and Mourinho was sacked that December.
In the following months, the manager and player - who failed to see eye to eye - shared cutting comments about their time together and Mourinho has been made to pay for calling Sanchez a 'sad man' during his ill-fated spell on the United books.
The ex-Old Trafford employees locked horns in the last-8 of the Italian cup competition on Tuesday night.
It was Sanchez who had the last laugh during that meeting, though, as he produced a superb 30-yard wonder goal to help knock Mourinho and Roma out during a 2-0 victory.
During a past interview with The Telegraph, the Portuguese said: "I felt him [Sanchez] not a happy man. I think in every job you have when you are not happy it is not so easy to perform at every level. Maybe I am wrong.
"Maybe it was me who was not capable to get into him and to get the best out of him. As a manager sometimes you have the capacity to get the best out of the players and other times you are not successful in that approach.
"But the reality is that I always felt [Sanchez] 'a sad man'. So probably in Italy he will recover this. I hope he can. I always wish well to every player."
Addressing their conflict to the BBC, the player added: "I say things as they are and in my opinion. Mourinho is one of the best coaches in the world in the way that he coaches, how he studies
