Alyth Development Trust announced that work to make safe the former sawmill site at Millhaugh off Bamff Road was due to start this week.
And in order to ensure public safety, the site – which was purchased for the community this summer – will be closed to members of the public while the work is being carried out.
It is expected that the work will be ongoing until March next year and will include the removal of asbestos from the site, the removal of large underground storage tanks, the removal of petrochemical impacted soils – which are hazardous and toxic to humans – and the demolition of dangerous structures.
Those behind the project have said that they appreciate the co-operation of the local community during this phase and that they apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.
ADT is working on ambitious plans for the site – which are featured in the town’s community action plan – which aim to transform it into a major community asset and a gateway to the Den o’ Alyth.
The plans received a massive boost earlier this year with grants of nearly £94,000 from the Scottish Government’s Vacant and Derelict Land Investment Programme and almost £77,000 from the Scottish Land Fund, which enabled ADT to acquire and begin redeveloping the site for a range of educational, environmental, social, and tourism-related activities on behalf of the local community.
With work to make the site safe now under way, ADT has also reiterated an appeal for people to get involved with a volunteer group which will determine how best to develop and use the site for gatherings, events and the educational programme.
