Woman, 71, in hospital with life-threatening injuries after multi-vehicle crash

A 71-year-old woman is in hospital with 'life-threatening' injuries after a crash involving multiple vehicles. The incident which took place in Westhoughton on Friday (December 15) involved several cars and a heavy goods vehicle which left the scene.
According to police, a car travelling towards Westhoughton overtook an HGV and subsequently collided with a car going in the opposite direction. A third vehicle then crashed into the back of the car as it came to a halt.
Officers investigating the 'serious collision' on Lower Leigh Road at around 4.15pm are now appealing for witnesses. GMP's Serious Collision Investigation Unit are particularly keen to speak to the driver of the HGV who did not stop at the scene as they may be a significant witness to the colllision, or have dashcam footage of the incident.

A GMP spokesperson said: "Officers investigating a serious collision which took place on Lower Leigh Road, Westhoughton on Friday 15 December 2023 at approximately 4.15pm are appealing for witnesses. It’s reported that a car travelling towards Westhoughton overtook a HGV, subsequently colliding with a car travelling in the opposite direction. A third vehicle then crashed into the back of this car as it came to a holt.
