S&M Scene in ‘Great Expectations’ Defended by BBC Content Chief, Writer Steven Knight Was ‘Reading Between the Lines’ of Dickens’ Novel

Leo Barraclough International Features Editor Charlotte Moore, chief content officer at the BBC, has defended the decision of screenwriter Steven Knight, best known for “Peaky Blinders,” to spice up Charles Dickens’ “Great Expectations” in his television adaptation, now airing on the broadcaster. Referring to an S&M scene in the show, in which a naked Mr. Pumblechook (played by Matt Berry) is seen being whipped by housewife-turned-dominatrix Mrs. Gargery (played by Hayley Squires), Moore said that Knight “believes absolutely everything [in the show] comes from what was alluded to” by Dickens in the novel. Moore, speaking Thursday to the Broadcasting Press Guild in London, added that “you have to really understanding what [Dickens] would have felt able to write about [in the Victorian era] and read between the lines.”

Brooklyn Nine-Nine grew to become one of the most beloved TV comedies of recent years.Created by Dan Goor and Michael Schur (Parks and Recreation), the police procedural comedy series follows a team of dysfunctional detectives within the New York City police department. The key selling point is its oddball cast of characters, from the overly confident Jake Peralta (Andy Samberg), the intimidating Rosa Diaz (Stephanie Beatriz), the clingy Charles Boyle (Joe Lo Truglio) and blunt commanding officer Captain Raymond Holt (Andre Braugher). The show came to an end in 2021 after eight seasons. It was originally cancelled by Fox after five seasons in May 2018, before it was picked up by NBC.As of April 20, 2023, all eight seasons are available on Netflix.Alternatively, you can buy all eight seasons through Amazon Prime Video.

Sarah Michelle Gellar Says She’s Not Involved in ‘Cruel Intentions’ TV Show, Is In Discussions for ‘Wolf Pack’ Season 2

K.J. Yossman Sarah Michelle Gellar is the embodiment of late ‘90s teen dreams thanks to iconic roles in “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” “Cruel Intentions” and “I Know What You Did Last Summer.” After a self-imposed hiatus she recently returned to television with “Wolf Pack,” a show from “Teen Wolf” showrunner Jeff Davis which again deals with the traumas of teenhood. This time, however, she plays an ass-kicking investigator with a mysterious past as well as taking on an executive producer role on the project. “I like scheduling and budgets and all that,” she tells Variety in Cannes, where Gellar is in town to pick up a well-deserved Canneseries Icon Award. (Gellar says she was also offered an opportunity to direct “Wolf Pack,” which she turned down).
