Winter storm cuts electrical power for thousands on East Coast

As heavy precipitation continues to impact much of the western United States, the Great Plains and America's South will be subjected to even more winter storm conditions this week. Heavy snow is forecast for the Northern and Central Plains beginning Tuesday night, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).

A 23-year-old Florida man is now out of isolation after being the first person in the state to test positive for a new and more contagious strain of COVID-19, health officials said Saturday.  The presence of the new strain in Martin County, on Florida's Treasure Coast, was first discovered Thursday through the CDC's random sampling of COVID-19 tests.  The CDC is now working with the Florida Department of Health to examine more cases in the area and ascertain how much the new strain has spread. 

A wintry mix of snow and widespread freezing rain was expected to roll into the Midwest and eastern U.S. on Friday, creating hazardous travel and possible power outages to open the New Year.

A forceful winter storm plowed through the Midwestern U.S. on Tuesday, canceling hundreds of flights, shuttering coronavirus testing sites and creating impossible conditions for drivers.  The National Weather Service had issued winter storm advisories for Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, South Dakota, Wisconsin, Nebraska and Illinois.  As the system traversed the Cornhusker State, Nebraska, the storm dumped more than 7 inches by Tuesday afternoon.

Winter storm warnings have been issued across the Midwest as the mid-Atlantic and Northeast brace for flooding and potential power outages on Christmas Eve.  A holiday blizzard tore through Minnesota on Wednesday, delaying and canceling flights and closing roads.  By Thursday, wind chill temperatures had dropped between minus 20 and minus 35 degrees in central Minnesota and the State Patrol reported to The Star Tribune that snowplows were not able to operate due to zero-visibility conditions.

Much of the East Coast is digging out from a major winter storm that dumped more than two feet of snow in some areas. The Nor'easter brought snow from northern Virginia to parts of New England on Wednesday.

The East Coast is battening down its hatches, preparing for Wednesday's arrival of what the Weather Channel dubbed "Winter Storm Gail," expected to spread over nearly 1,000 miles and affect more than 40 million people.

A major nor’easter is set to pack a punch and bring big snow to the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast on Wednesday afternoon and into Thursday morning. A classic coastal low will set up just off the Northeast Coast and bring rain, ice, heavy snow, strong winds and blizzard conditions in some areas. The southern Appalachians and the interior sections of the Mid-Atlantic will see the possibility for accumulating ice, which will lead to travel disruptions, possible powerline damage and tree damage.

A "significant winter storm" is on track to impact portions of the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast this Wednesday and Thursday, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).  Heavy snow is expected west and north of the I-95 corridor in the Washington D.C., Philadelphia, New York City, and Boston metropolitan areas.The powerful storm system is currently slamming the west coast, and as it moves east, could become responsible for the next major winter storm in the U.S.

Wintry weather hit parts of Arkansas Sunday, sparking winter storm warnings and advisories. “Winter Storm Warnings & Advisories continue to be in effect for much of NW and north central Arkansas,” tweeted the Arkansas Department of Transportation late on Sunday morning.
