The Prince and Princess of Wales have now been married for over 12 years but their relationship did not always run as smoothly in the early days of their romance.
Prince William and Kate Middleton famously met while they were both students at the prestigious St Andrews University in Scotland and started dating during their studies.
However, despite remaining together for the entirety of their time at university, they shocked the world when it was revealed they had split several years after graduation.
Thankfully, their break-up turned out to be short-lived and three years later, Prince William got down on one knee and asked Kate to marry him, the Mirror reports.
Many had wondered what had taken the heir so long to propose to Kate but he revealed his heartbreaking reason in their 2010 engagement interview.
When asked by interviewer Tom Bradby whether the long time before their engagement was because William wanted to slowly introduce his future wife to royal life and give her the opportunity to "back out", he replied: "Massively so."
The royal explained: "Her and her family, I really want to make sure that they have the best, sort of, guidance and chance to see what life has been like - or what life is like - in the family.
"That's kind of why I have been waiting this long as I wanted to give her a chance to see and to back out if she needed to," which was met by a laugh from Kate.
In the interview, they also addressed their earlier split as William said: "We were sort of both finding ourselves as such and being different characters and stuff, it was very much trying to find our own way and we were growing up.
"It was just sort of a bit of space and a bit of things like that, and it worked out for the better."

Emily Blunt and Jaume Collet-Serra will reunite for something beyond a “Jungle Cruise” sequel. Deadline reports that actress and director will work together on “Kate Warne,” an action thriller for Amazon MGM. Dawyne Johnson‘s Seven Buck banner also fronts the project, making it the third Collet-Serra film it’s backed after “Jungle Cruise” and “Black Adam.” Currently, Blunt is only on board as a producer, but she’s looking to star in the picture, too; obviously, conversations about that can’t start again until the SAG strike lifts.
Matthew Vaughn had a long conversation with “Happy Sad Confused” this week about his new film “Argylle” and just about everything else he’s done in his career. That includes Vaughn’s aspirations for an MCU-like spy cinematic universe at MARV that combines “Argylle,” the “Kingsman” franchise, and a third franchise he has in the works.
Michael Schneider Variety Editor at Large SPOILER ALERT: Do not read ahead if you have not watched Season 10, Episode 5 of “The Masked Singer,” “A Celebration of Elton John,” which aired Oct. 18 on Fox. Elton John and Bernie Taupin wrote the track “Philadelphia Freedom” in 1975 at the behest of tennis icon Billie Jean King (whose team was the Philadelphia Freedoms). So, it was wildly appropriate that King performed the song on Wednesday during “A Celebration of Elton John” on Fox’s “The Masked Singer.” King performed “Philadelphia Freedom” as the Royal Hen — and the fact that we know she was on the show means that, alas, she was also the next celebrity to be unmasked on “Singer.” “A true trail blazer, she is famous for championing equal opportunities for all, and has made it her royal mission to be a voice for the voiceless,” a “Masked Singer” voiceover shared in giving the hints to whom the Royal Hen might be.
The next evolution in Timothée Chalamet‘s acting career? Singing onscreen, which he’ll do first in Paul King‘s “Wonka” and again in James Mangold‘s upcoming Bob Dylan bioopic “A Complete Unknown.” But is Chalamet prepared to take on the role of the iconic singer-songwriter? You bet he is, thanks to his “Dune: Part Two‘ co-star Austin Butler.
