“The weather across the U.K. looks unsettled today, with showers or longer spells of rain for many. Some heavy, thundery downpours are expected on Friday and Sunday,” the national weather service said, forecasting “another cloudy, wet day for many” on Saturday.
According to the Met Office, it was also cloudy with a few showers on Queen Elizabeth‘s coronation day in June of 1953, with temperatures of about 52° F.
Royal enthusiasts are hopeful that the weather won’t affect festivities around the church service at Westminster Abbey, including the King and Queen Consort’s procession back to Buckingham Palace in the Gold State Coach, as well as the first balcony appearance of the couple alongside working royals.
There is one activity that is dependent on the weather: the flypast over Buckingham Palace. The planes flying overhead may be canceled for safety if the weather is bad.
Otherwise, the royals will likely proceed as planned even if there are some showers.
Prince William himself weighed in on the weather with a rare comment on Thursday (May 4) via People, saying: “Crossing fingers for the weather!”
