Will Smith smashes box office with ‘Bad Boys: Ride Or Die’ comeback

Will Smith’s latest movie Bad Boys: Ride Or Die has been a box office success in its opening weekend. The fourth instalment in the buddy cop action franchise Bad Boys, and sequel to 2020’s Bad Boys For Life, arrived in US theatres on June 6.Reuniting Smith and Martin Lawrence, and marking Smith’s second return to the silver screen following the infamous Oscars slap incident in 2022, the film was positively received.Alongside generally favourable reviews, the film amassed $56million at the domestic box office, and $104.6million globally. However, in a two-star review, NME criticised the film’s subplots, writing: “As the film’s title hints, Marcus also has a bizarre thing where he believes he can’t die … Needless to say, this irritating idea resurfaces time and again, to diminishing returns.”Compared with other major releases this summer, the film, which also stars Eric Dane and Vanessa Hudgens, was a close second to Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes in its domestic launch, which garnered an impressive $58million.Ride Or Die, which had a budget of $100million also had a successful opening weekend globally, collecting $19.3million in Europe, and reportedly setting franchise records in the Middle East and Latin America, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The first film in the Bad Boys franchise was released in 1995, and featured Lawrence and Smith as Miami narcotics detectives Mike Lowrey and Marcus Burnett.

‘Bad Boys: Ride or Die’ boosts Will Smith’s comeback and box office with $56 million opening weekend

opened with an estimated $56 million in theaters over the weekend, handing Hollywood a much-needed summer hit and Smith his biggest success since he slapped Chris Rock at the Academy Awards.Expectations were all over the map for “Ride or Die” given the dismal moviegoing market thus far this summer and Smith’s less certain box-office clout. In the end, though, the Sony Pictures release came in very close to, or slightly above, its tracking forecast.“Ride or Die,” produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, is Smith’s first theatrical test since his 2022 slap of Rock earned him a 10-year Oscar ban.

Even if ‘Bad Boys’ is a hit, Will Smith’s comeback won’t be easy

the infamous Oscars smack, when Smith stormed the stage of the Dolby Theater and slapped presenter Chris Rock for making a jab about Smith’s wife Jada Pinkett Smith, it still stings for many ticket-buyers. Let alone Rock. The actor’s televised assault of the comic and unhinged shouts of “Get my wife’s name out of your f–king mouth!” shattered his public image as a charismatic and funny life of the party who could wring laughs even out of a devastating alien invasion. The hit was enough to get him banned from the Oscars until 2032. Frankly, he’s lucky that he wasn’t arrested.

Will Smith thinks this is the best movie he’s ever made

Will Smith has named his choices for the best films he has ever made, picking movies from across his career. The actor was appearing on the YouTube show Hot Ones when he was asked by host Sean Evans to choose the four performances that most define his career. In between struggling with increasingly potent hot sauces – a struggle not helped by him rubbing pepper into his eyes late in the episode – he named his career favourites. Watch the video below:“I think the individual best movie that I’ve ever made is The Pursuit of Happyness,” he said, referring to the 2006 drama in which he starred alongside his son Jaden.“Right behind that is the first Men In Black – direction, cinematography and music.”He went on to mention Bad Boys and Aladdin as being “among the most fun” he has ever had.“But in terms of all-around best movies, best performances, if I had to put four of them in a time capsule, it would be: The Pursuit of Happyness, the first Men In Black, I Am Legend and probably King Richard.” Smith is currently starring in Bad Boys: Ride Or Die, the fourth instalment in the buddy cop film series in which he stars alongside Martin Lawrence. The film, which also stars Vanessa Hudgens, Tiffany Haddish, DJ Khaled and Joe Pantoliano, is directed by Belgian duo Adil & Bilall, who also oversaw the previous entry, 2020’s Bad Boys For Life.

Will Smith’s ‘Bad Boys 4’ slap is reportedly a nod to Oscars scandal

Will Smith’s character in Bad Boys: Ride Or Die is slapped repeatedly in a climactic scene, in what is being described as a nod to his infamous Oscars moment. At the ceremony in March 2022, Smith slapped Chris Rock onstage after the comedian made a joke about his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith. Following the incident, Smith apologised to Rock, resigned from the Academy, and was banned from attending Academy events for 10 years.Smith later released another apology on YouTube in July 2022 where he described his behaviour as “unacceptable”, adding: “I just didn’t realise, I wasn’t thinking about how many people got hurt in that moment.”And now, in his new film, his character is seen being repeatedly slapped in the face in what many reviews have cited as an obvious reference to the controversy.Variety note that it could be an effort to “make cruel fun” of Smith’s “transgression”, while Daily Beast describe it as “a tasteless nod” to the real-life slap in order to “rehab Smith’s image”.Bad Boys: Ride Or Die is the fourth instalment in the buddy cop film series, starring Smith as Mike Lowrey alongside Martin Lawrence as Marcus Burnett.

‘Bad Boys: Ride or Die’ review: Will Smith gets slapped in latest comeback attempt

smacking comedian Chris Rock onstage at the Oscars in 2022.But, for the time being anyway, that bizarre incident is still fresh on viewers’ minds, and the “Independence Day” actor remains a very challenging guy to like — even in an easily digestible buddy-cop movie. His second go at a comeback after last year’s “Emancipation” would suggest a clichéd old phrase about third times. In the mediocre sequel to 2020’s surprisingly fun “Bad Boys for Life,” Smith is completely dead behind the eyes, with that glazed-over look of corporate burnout.

‘Bad Boys’ Review: ‘Ride Or Die’ Delivers The Mostly Entertaining Mayhem This Franchise Craves

The well-established ‘Bad Boys’ buddy cop formula isn’t rocket science. It’s combustible friction, and thus comedy between two very different Miami detectives— Will Smith as Mike Lowery and Martin Lawrence as Marcus Barnett—and as many chaotic shoot ‘em ups and car chases as possible as humanly possible mixed with Michael Bayhem-esque cinematic slickness and hysterics.
