smacking comedian Chris Rock onstage at the Oscars in 2022.But, for the time being anyway, that bizarre incident is still fresh on viewers’ minds, and the “Independence Day” actor remains a very challenging guy to like — even in an easily digestible buddy-cop movie. His second go at a comeback after last year’s “Emancipation” would suggest a clichéd old phrase about third times. In the mediocre sequel to 2020’s surprisingly fun “Bad Boys for Life,” Smith is completely dead behind the eyes, with that glazed-over look of corporate burnout.
Maybe his peepers are tired from watching his Q score plummet for two years. Not so of his co-star Lawrence, who is as boisterously silly as ever, playing a bumbling Miami police officer for whom enforcing the law is an annoyance. When his character Marcus suffers a heart attack and has a near death experience, he becomes obsessed with discreetly eating Skittles and Doritos behind his concerned wife’s back. Strange visions have led him to believe that he’s invincible.
It’s random, but it’s something.Lawrence’s irrepressible comic energy — I could listen to him shout “Oh s–t!” on an endless loop — is what keeps “Ride or Die” from being a routine traffic stop.Yes, it’s true that Smith’s Mike has always been the straight man of the duo. But here he’s practically RoboCop.No longer a “terminal bachelor,” Mike weds Christine (Melanie Liburd) at the start and strenuously cracks a couple smiles.
The honeymoon phase lasts barely a minute, however, because the partners soon learn that the late Miami PD Capt. Howard has been accused of covertly working for South American drug cartels. With the help of Mike’s incarcerated, long-lost son Armando (Jacob Scipio) — a drug lord, himself — the pair attempts

Ethan Shanfeld Following the success of “Bad Boys: Ride or Die,” Will Smith is teaming up again with Sony Pictures for the sci-fi thriller “Resistor,” based on Daniel Suarez’s 2014 novel “Influx.” The movie hails from Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal, Steve Tisch and Tony Shaw of Escape Artists, which has been developing the project for years alongside Smith and Jon Mone through Westbrook. Its fortunes at the box office have plummeted, the movies often stink, it’s been forced to lay off staffers and is quickly losing its once-dictatorial grip on American childhoods.
guest on the program on Wednesday morning, the American comedian did not mince his words when asked if he spoke to fellow comedian Chris Rock directly after that infamous Oscars slap, courtesy of Will Smith.Schneider recalled being in a “sticky” situation following the incident as he was “an elected official of the union” at the time, so he could not speak freely then. Will Smith’s latest movie Bad Boys: Ride Or Die has been a box office success in its opening weekend. The fourth instalment in the buddy cop action franchise Bad Boys, and sequel to 2020’s Bad Boys For Life, arrived in US theatres on June 6.Reuniting Smith and Martin Lawrence, and marking Smith’s second return to the silver screen following the infamous Oscars slap incident in 2022, the film was positively received.Alongside generally favourable reviews, the film amassed $56million at the domestic box office, and $104.6million globally. However, in a two-star review, NME criticised the film’s subplots, writing: “As the film’s title hints, Marcus also has a bizarre thing where he believes he can’t die … Needless to say, this irritating idea resurfaces time and again, to diminishing returns.”Compared with other major releases this summer, the film, which also stars Eric Dane and Vanessa Hudgens, was a close second to Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes in its domestic launch, which garnered an impressive $58million.Ride Or Die, which had a budget of $100million also had a successful opening weekend globally, collecting $19.3million in Europe, and reportedly setting franchise records in the Middle East and Latin America, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The first film in the Bad Boys franchise was released in 1995, and featured Lawrence and Smith as Miami narcotics detectives Mike Lowrey and Marcus Burnett.

opened with an estimated $56 million in theaters over the weekend, handing Hollywood a much-needed summer hit and Smith his biggest success since he slapped Chris Rock at the Academy Awards.Expectations were all over the map for “Ride or Die” given the dismal moviegoing market thus far this summer and Smith’s less certain box-office clout. In the end, though, the Sony Pictures release came in very close to, or slightly above, its tracking forecast.“Ride or Die,” produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, is Smith’s first theatrical test since his 2022 slap of Rock earned him a 10-year Oscar ban.

J. Kim Murphy The boys are back in town. Sony and Columbia’s “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” got off to a solid start at the box office with $21.6 millionfrom 3,885 locations across Friday and preview screenings.
Sony‘s R-rated Bad Boys: Ride or Die did $5.875M yesterday at previews that began at 3PM, an amount of cash, which actually is only 8% off from the previews of the franchise’s previous long-awaited threequel, 2020’s Bad Boys for Life, which did $6.36M. That’s a great start for Bad Boys: Ride or Die as it enters what has been an embattled marketplace due to lack of movie inventory from the strikes, not to mention — there hasn’t been any mass-appealing movies, that is outside of Disney/20th Century Studios’ Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (which just crossed $144.3M). Audience reaction last night to the Will Smith and Martin Lawrence reteam was 5 stars and 88% positive on Screen Engine/Comscore’s PostTrak, while Rotten Tomatoes audience score stands at 97%.

The well-established ‘Bad Boys’ buddy cop formula isn’t rocket science.
