Last summer's transfer window can be deemed as a success for Manchester United, with the addition of Casemiro in particular spurring Erik ten Hag's side on to what has been a successful season so far.
Things could have been different with the Brazilian having emerged as a transfer target after a failed move for Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong. The Dutch midfielder worked alongside ten Hag at Ajax and they enjoyed great success together before Barca swooped for the Netherlands international.
Since his move to Spain, the Catalan club have slipped out of Europe's elite and last summer's overhaul could have seen him leave the club with Barca keen to make money following a big spending spree. However, he stayed put and has been an ever present this season with the club currently top of La Liga.

Barca boss Xavi said this week that de Jong never expressed an interest to leave the club, with talk of his potential departure largely fuelled by media speculation and his relationship with ten Hag. There is believed to have been concrete interest from both Chelsea and United, but his manager has reiterated this week that there was little chance of a transfer coming to fruition.
With Barca seemingly heading in the right direction under Xavi after a tough start, the chance to sign the 25-year-old may have passed for the time being although his showings against United will form part of the match narrative.
