Bruno Fernandes’ career in Manchester is severely underrated, from high goal contributions to the intangibles he brings, he is arguably the best player to grace the Theatre of Dreams in years.
When he first joined the club from Sporting Lisbon back in January 2020, Fernandes hit the ground running, with eight goals and seven assists in just 14 games to end the season, he was a lockdown hit.
Since that initial run, Fernandes has consistently been United’s main man, and has racked up 60 goals and 52 assists in a whopping 175 games for the club to date. However, this season has been his best in the red of United, despite a slight drop in goal contributions.

This is because despite the magnitude of goals and assists early on, he was often criticised for his perceived ‘hero ball’ attitude to football. Taking it upon himself often to drag his side toward a win single-handedly, this including shooting from ridiculous positions on the field and attempting insane passes, which sometimes paid dividends but often resulted in a loss of possession.
It is testament to Erik ten Hag that since his arrival, Fernandes is now much more refined. He was a raw talent before but has now been shaped into a midfielder who suits a possession style of play but is still capable of producing moments of sheer inspiration.
The performance against Nottingham Forest epitomised why Fernandes is so important to Ten Hag and beloved by fans. With six key passes and two big chances created, he was unlucky not to add to his assist tally but played a pivotal part in the first goal slotting Anthony Martial through, for the shot which Antony followed up on the rebound to score.
