ABC has suspended Whoopi Goldberg from talkshow The View for two weeks over her "wrong and hurtful" Holocaust comments. The 66 year old Ghost actress said that the horrific genocide of European Jewish people during World War II was "not about race". Between 1941 and 1945, Nazi Germany and its collaborators systematically murdered six million Jews – around two-thirds of Europe's Jewish population. While she's since apologised for the remarks, ABC News president Kim Godwin has decided to ban her from The View for the next two weeks.
In a note to staff on Tuesday 1 January night, Kim wrote: "Effective immediately, I am suspending Whoopi Goldberg for two weeks for her wrong and hurtful comments. "While Whoopi has apologized, I've asked her to take time to reflect and learn about the impact of her comments. "The entire ABC News organization stands in solidarity with our Jewish colleagues, friends, family and communities." In the message, obtained by the Hollywood Reporter, she added: "These decisions are never easy, but necessary. "Just last week I noted that the culture at ABC News is one that is driven, kind, inclusive, respectful, and transparent.
Whoopi's comments do not align with those values." Whoopi made the remarks while discussing a US school board's decision to ban a graphic novel about the experiences of a Holocaust survivor, titled Maus. “Let’s be truthful – the Holocaust isn’t about race. It’s about man’s inhumanity to man – that’s what it’s about," she said at the time.
