Now, Whoopi is regularly seen debating on talk show The View and has made headlines for her controversial and "offensive" comments on the Holocaust. She has since apologised and been suspended for two weeks by ABC to show support for the Jewish communities.
She is reportedly worth a whopping $60 million. Whoopi was the first African-American woman to win the Academy award for Best Supporting Actress in nearly 50 years after her role in Ghost. Her career has generated a high fortune from the range of parts she fills from acting to presenting and writing.
Whoopi is also one of only 16 entertainers to posses an Emmy Award, a Grammy, an Academy Award (Oscar), and a Tony Award. From her role as co-host on The View alone, Whoopi is thought to generate a salary of $8 million per year. Whoopi has one daughter, Alexandra Martin, 48.
Whoopi gave birth in 1973 to her daughter with former husband Alvin Martin. She went on to raise Alex as a single mother, despite remarrying. Alex is also an actress and film producer, having followed in her mother's footsteps, starring in Strange As Angels (2003), Call Me Claus (2001) and American Intellectuals (1999).
Alex also appeared beside her mother in Sister Act 2 and The Color Purple. Alex has children of her own, making Whoopi a grandmother to three grandchildren: Amara, Jerzey and Mason Dean. Amara Skye was born when Alex was 16 years of age and the father of the child remains disclosed from the public.
