Back in 2005, Melngailis opened her first raw food vegan restaurant Pure Food and Wine in New York, which quickly attracted the attention of magazines and A-list celebrities such as Owen Wilson and Alec Baldwin. The restaurant made it into Forbes’ list of All Star New York Eateries for five consecutive years.
A few years later, in 2011, the restaurant was still performing well and Melngailis' personal life was also booming. She embarked on a romantic relationship with Anthony Strangis, whom she met online.
The following year the pair were married and at his first opportunity Strangis spent Melngailis’ money - he told her he could improve her business and make her financially independent without the need of any investors. Strangis became so overdrawn Melngailis was unable to pay her staff three years later and had to shut down.
In order to secure investments to reopen her restaurant she reached out to former patrons and claimed she had withdrawn money to help her mother. Even after the restaurant opened up again, she continued to withdraw company funds on behalf of Strangis.
